Meet the Pioneers

Leader 1

Hao F. Zhang, Ph.D.

Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Ophthalmology at Northwestern University and co-inventor of Opticent's core technologies. As an R&D lead, he coordinates novel ophthalmologic imaging research and product development. Dr. Zhang holds a Ph.D. from Texas A&M, brings extensive expertise in biomedical optics and OCT, and has earned prestigious accolades including the NIH IMPACT award and the NAS Cozzarelli Prize.

Leader 2

Cheng Sun, Ph.D.

Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University and co-inventor of Opticent's core technologies. With over a decade of expertise in optics and advanced manufacturing, Dr. Sun co-leads R&D efforts in ophthalmic imaging research, product development, and grant acquisition. He holds a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University and concurrently directs pioneering, NSF-funded nanophotonics research at Northwestern.

Leader 3

Joel S. Schuman, M.D.

Dr. Schuman leads the Advanced Ophthalmic Imaging Laboratory (AOIL), directing a multidisciplinary team of ophthalmologists, experts, software specialists, and statisticians. His research primarily focuses on the study of glaucoma, a leading cause of global blindness. He and his colleagues pioneer the development of advanced imaging tools designed to accurately diagnose this debilitating disease, monitor its progression, and investigate its underlying pathogenesis.

Leader 4

Nicholas J. Volpe, M.D.

Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Earning his credentials at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Volpe transformed Northwestern’s department into a premier research institution. His clinical and research interests include neuro-ophthalmic disorders, vis-OCT, and optic nerve disease. He serves on numerous boards, including the American Ophthalmological Society and the Heed Foundation.
